Vidya Balan (pronounced [ʋɪd̪jaː baːlən]; born 1 January 1978) is an Indian actress. She has established a successful career in Hindi language films of Bollywood and is the recipient of one National Film Award, five Filmfare Awards, and five Screen Awards. She is known for portraying strong female protagonists and has been acknowledged in the media for breaking stereotypes of a Hindi film heroine.
Vidya aspired to a career in film from a young age, and had her first acting role in the 1995 sitcom Hum Paanch. She pursued a master's degree in sociology from theUniversity of Mumbai and simultaneously made several unsuccessful attempts to start a career in film. She subsequently featured in various television commercials and music videos, and in 2003 made her feature film debut as the protagonist of the independentBengali drama Bhalo Theko. In 2005 Vidya garnered praise for her first Hindi film, the musical drama Parineeta, and followed it with a leading role in the highly successful 2006 comedy film Lage Raho Munna Bhai. This initial success was followed by roles in the romantic comedies Heyy Babyy (2007) and Kismat Konnection (2008) which met with negative comments from the critics.
The year 2009, however, marked the beginning of the most successful period in Vidya's career as she portrayed five consecutive roles to wide critical acclaim in the 2009 drama Paa, the 2010 black comedy Ishqiya, the 2011 semi-biographical thriller No One Killed Jessica, the 2011 biopic The Dirty Picture, and the 2012 thriller Kahaani. These roles established her as a leading actress of Hindi cinema and earned her the tag of a "female hero". In addition to acting in films, Vidya promotes humanitarian causes and supports the empowerment of women. She initially drew criticism for her fluctuating weight and "questionable" dress sense, but was later credited in the media for "not morphing herself to fit into any conventional slot".[1] She is married to the film producer Siddharth Roy Kapur.
Early life and background[edit]
Vidya Balan was born on 1 January 1978 in Ottapalam,[2] a town in the Palakkad District of Kerala, to P. R. Balan, currently the Executive Vice-President of Digicable,[3] and Saraswathy Balan, a homemaker.[4][5] According to Vidya, they speak a mix of Tamil andMalayalam at home; she is also well versed in Hindi, Marathi, English and Bengali.[6] Her elder sister, Priya Balan, works in the field of advertising.[4]
Vidya grew up in the suburban neighbourhood of Chembur, Mumbai and was schooled at St. Anthony Girls' High School.[7][8] From a young age she aspired to a career in film and was inspired by the work of actors Shabana Azmi and Madhuri Dixit.[9][10] At the age of sixteen, she starred in the first season of Ekta Kapoor's sitcom Hum Paanch as Radhika, a bespectacled teenager.[11][12] Following the success of the show, Vidya refused director Anurag Basu's offer to star in a television soap opera, as she wanted to concentrate on a film career.[13] Her parents were supportive of her decision but encouraged her to complete her education first,[9] so she attended St. Xavier's College to pursue a bachelor's degree in sociology and later earned a master's degree from the University of Mumbai.[14][15]
Career[edit]
Struggle and debut (2000–03)[edit]
While pursuing her master's degree, Vidya was cast as the female lead in the Malayalam film Chakram, opposite Mohanlal and was subsequently signed on for twelve other Malayalam language films.[9] However, due to production difficulties, Chakram was shelved.[16]The postponement of a film starring Mohanlal was an unheard of occurrence in Malayalam cinema and film producers blamed her for bringing "bad luck" to the project; labelled her as a "jinx" and replaced her in all the films that she had been contracted for.[9] She then shifted focus to Tamil cinema. In 2001, she was cast as the female lead in N. Linguswamy's Run (2002). However, after completing the first shooting schedule of the film, she was unceremoniously dropped and replaced by Meera Jasmine.[17] She was signed up under false pretences for a sex comedy, a genre she was then uncomfortable with, and thus decided to leave the project.[9] Thereafter, she signed on for a third Tamil film, Manasellam (2003), but was replaced by Trisha Krishnan as the director was dissatisfied with her work.[18] Kalari Vikraman (2003), a Malayalam film that she completed work for, failed to get a theatrical release.[19]
After failing to start a film career, Vidya appeared in approximately sixty television commercials and in music videos for Euphoria andShubha Mudgal; a majority of these were directed by Pradeep Sarkar.[13][20] In 2003, she was signed on by Goutam Halder for his independent Bengali drama Bhalo Theko; her first film release.[21] Her portrayal of Anandi, a young woman reminiscing about her past, won her an Anandalok Purashkar for Best Actress.[22]
Breakthrough (2005–08)[edit]
In 2005 Vidya made her Hindi film debut with Pradeep Sarkar's musical drama Parineeta. Before being cast for the film, she had to undergo extensive auditions for a period of six months.[16][23] The film, an adaptation of Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay's novel of the same name, narrated the love story of an idealist Lalita (Vidya) and an egoist Shekhar (Saif Ali Khan), the son of a capitalist businessman.[24] Her performance in the film was praised by critics;[12] Derek Elley from Variety wrote, " An acting revelation is Tamil newcomer Balan, whose devoted but dignified Lalita is the picture's heart and soul."[25] Parineeta fetched her a Best Female Debutaward and a nomination for Best Actress at the annual Filmfare Awards ceremony.[26] The following year, Vidya appeared oppositeSanjay Dutt in Rajkumar Hirani's comedy film Lage Raho Munna Bhai. She portrayed the role of Jhanvi, a radio jockey and the love interest of the protagonist Munna Bhai. To prepare for her role, she met with a couple of radio jockeys and watched
them at work.[27]Her performance was critically well

Early life and family[edit]
Born on April 28, 1987 to a malayali mother and a Telugu father, Samantha was raised in Chennai, Tamil Nadu becoming fluent in Tamil language.[5] [6][7] As part of her education, Samantha completed her schooling from St.Stephens Matriculation school, Pallavaram, Chennai and did her Higher secondary in Holy Angels Anglo-Indian Higher Secondary School, T.Nagar. She graduated with a commercedegree from Stella Maris College, Chennai.[6]
Career[edit]
Debut[edit]
Samantha's first release was Indira Productions' Gautham Menon directed Telugu film, Ye Maaya Chesave. The film simultaneously made in Tamil as Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa, created much anticipation prior to release, primarily due to the first-time-collaboration between Gautham Menon and composer A. R. Rahman.[8] The actress was signed up for the project in mid August 2009 and completed schedules across India and the United States and the film was released in February 26, 2010.[9] The film portrayed Samantha as the lead character of Jessie, which was also the working title of the film; a Malayali Christian girl living in Hyderabad, whom the male protagonist, played by Naga Chaitanya falls in love with. Upon release, Samantha received very positive reviews for her portrayal, with film also garnering much critical acclaim.[10] Critics at Sify claimed that Samantha was the "scene-stealer" and her beauty "is alluring" adding that "she was the girl to watch out for".[10] Jeevi, from the Idlebrain reviews site, cited that "Samantha’s debut is one of the best heroine debuts in Telugu cinema" and that her "minute expressions she gave spoke volumes about her", whilst labelling the film as a "classic". Samantha, alongside her co-star, Naga Chaitanya, also appeared in a guest appearance in the Tamil version of the film.[11] Both films emerged as grand successes in Tamil and Telugu respectively, propelling Samantha to sign bigger projects.[12] She followed up her collaborations with Gautham Menon and A. R. Rahman by appearing in the music video for the World Classical Tamil Conference 2010 promotional song, Semmozhiyaana Tamizh Mozhiyaam, which Menon directed and Rahman composed.
2010[edit]
Samantha's next release was the Sathya Jyothi-produced romantic drama, Baana Kaathadi, opposite Adharvaa, which was actually the third Tamil film signed by her, but released first due to delay of the other two projects.[13][14] Following terms agreed in early 2009, the film continued shoot for a year and after several postponements finally released in August 2010 to positive response.[14][15] In the film, Samantha plays a student of National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT), the first such role in Tamil cinema.[16] Her next release, was Ravi Varman's Moscowin Kavery, initially her very first acting assignment, which began in August 2007, with Samantha, then briefly known as Yasodha, joining the team later in the year.[17] The film introduced a host of new actors, with music carried out by Thaman, then making his debut in music composing. In an interview, much prior to release in 2008, Ravi Varman mentioned that he had decided that Samantha would be the lead actress for his film within three minutes after viewing one of her commercial assignments.[18] In the interview, he went on to describe her as an actress with "intelligence" and "potential", whilst drawing comparisons with noted actress,Revathi.[18] However, due to Ravi Varman's date conflicts with his projects as a cinematographer, the film languished in development hell, eventually releasing in August 2010.[19] The film gained unanimously poor reviews from critics,[20] however Samantha's performance was labelled as one of the sole highlights that the film offered.[21] Samantha, during the making of the last three releases, had also signed up for the Narain starrer, Pookada Ravi in August 2008 to play the lead role of a modern girl.[22] Despite the film continuing schedules at regular intervals, the film was stalled throughout 2009 and is unlikely to be released.[23] Samantha went onto feature in Vamsi Paidipally's Telugu film Brindaavanam in which she had a supporting role alongside NTR Jr and Kajal Aggarwal.[24] Her role of Indu was well received despite being shorter in screen time than her previous roles and the film became her second successful Telugu film.[25]
